Summary 줄거리
1-44
The narrator and some other villagers go into Blinn’s tent during the Coven Tree Church Social.
They are given a white card with a dot on it at the price of 50 cents. If they press the white dot and make a wish it will come true.
People are unsure and doubts what Blinn says. Blinn tells them to choose their wish carefully and that he will never be back in this town.
POLLY
Leland and Lenora are twins and they are friends of Polly. However, they bully Polly whenever Polly has a problem with either of them. Ex: They treated her to be invisible when Polly got mad at Leland for scaring off her frog.
The twins dislike Agatha and Eunice, but Polly admires their beauty and their family's wealth.
When Polly accidentally rips Agatha’s dress Agatha slaps P and says mean things.
That night Polly wishes to the white card that she wants to be liked by people and especially by Agatha and Eunice.
Next day, Polly starts to make bull frog sounds that she cannot stop. The bullfrog sound stops for a while but re-starts when she calls Agatha dumb during math class.
Polly gets home with the teacher’s note and the frog sound stops. However, the twins come to tell her that Agatha and Eunice are plotting revenge against her.
45-98
Polly goes to school and says some mean things to the boys and this makes her bullfrog sound start again.
Polly realizes that she is making the sound because of the wish and that she makes the sound when she says something mean.
Polly wants to appologize to Agatha for calling her dumb so she goes to the Stew Meat’s store.
Polly overhears the two girls- they want to invite Polly over for tea and do something evil to her.
The two girls invite Polly to a tea party and Polly accept the invitation.
In school Polly says nice things to a girl about her dress and is polite to the boys as well.
When Polly arrives at the party she says kind things to Agatha’s mom and apologizes about ripping Agatha’s dress. She behaves herself in the tea party and leaves when she realizes that she really doesn’t want to be friends with theses ‘snobs’.
Polly leaves the party and shouts what she wants to say to Agatha and Eunice. Then she heads to the blinking lights of the Coven Tree.
ROWENA
Rowena is in love with Henry Piper (salesman) who visits the village twice a year to sell machinery.
Rowena asks her mom if Henry could stay at their house this time. Sam tells R’s mom that they were holding hands before. Rowena's mom does not allow Henry to stay at their house.
Henry clearly is flirting with R to sell machines to R’s dad.
When Henry comes, Rowena does not want him to leave so she makes a wish with the white card: H put down his roots in Coven Tree.
This literally happens! First Rowena tries to help him and later Sam as well but H is becoming a tree.
99-147
Rowena realizes that it is her fault and she tries to solve the problem with Sam. In the meantime she decided to keep Henry comfortably by pulling out the weeds.
Later, R goes to a party which she almost forgot about. Sam watched Henry for the time being.
When R who didn’t enjoy the party comes back, she notices that Henry has become more of a tree than a human.
When Henry actually becomes a sycamore tree, Rowena is devastated.
Sam goes to the library to read about magic in hopes of bringing back Henry.
Sam tells R that Henry lied to her about visiting so many places.
R has an idea to bring Henry back and Sam confesses his feelings to her.
ADAM
Adam’s farm always lacks water so his dad makes him fetch water to water the crops and stuff.
Adam’s does not like fetching the water because his friends make fun of him for it.
Adam’s mom asks Adam for fence so she could grow flowers--which requires water of course.
At night A wishes that there was “Water all over this farm”.
The wish comes true later that day when poking a hole in the ground results in spouting of water umbrellas.
148-181
Initially, Adam’s family is happy for the rain. However, the next day they are worried that the house will drown in water.
Eventually, their house is at the verge of drowning so they evacuate and move the furnitures out of the house with a raft.
Adam’s dad refuses their neighbors’ help.
Adam confesses to his dad that he made the wish with the white card.
Adam’s dad is not mad and says that he would have done the same.
Adam suddenly has an idea while looking at the four lit houses.
The three kids’ ‘idea’ is to use Stew Meat’s wish card to cancel their wishes.
The kids tell Stew all of their stories and argue who Stew will use the card for.
Stew uses the card to cancel all three wishes without nasty consequences.
People like Polly more because she says more nicer things now.
