Hello! Today I will be sharing my NYU supplement essay that is also known as the 'Why NYU' essay. I hope that this could be of some help to students who will be applying this year. My following posts after this will be about explaining the essay's writing strategies. Such posts will be uploaded in both Korean and English so please subscribes to this blog or come back to it after bookmarking it!
※This essay was used in the 2019 Early Decision I application which resulted in the final acceptance to NYU Abu Dhabi. Please do not upload or share this content with out a reference to this tistory blog. You are more than welcome to share this link via any types of social media ;-)
We would like to know more about your interest in NYU. We are particularly interested in knowing what motivated you to apply to NYU and more specifically, why you have applied or expressed interest in a particular campus, school, college, program, and/or area of study? If you have applied to more than one, please tell us why you are interested in each of the campuses, schools, colleges, or programs to which you have applied. We want to understand – Why NYU? (maximum 400 words)
Due to my family's nomadic lifestyle, I was able to experience starkly contrasting forms of education: an intensively stressful academic system in Seoul, an utterly relaxed learning environment in the Southern part of Jeju Island, and an open-minded international school education in the Philippines. The other six schools I've attended were all mitigated forms of the three extremes.
In each school, I learned how youth in that region are 'taught to think': how to process and react to their surroundings. I started to understand the socio-economic factors that influence the way people talk, think, and act. Because I had experienced both the rural and urban living and the conventional and innovative education, I am able to appreciate and culturally relate to multiple perspectives. As a recipient of an international education, however, I have noticed that while both the liberal and conservative views are recognized, sometimes certain views are more acknowledged than others. I believe a global leader should be open-minded and attentive towards both newly-formed and existing ideas, so when most classmates uphold the modern ideas in a discussion, I tend to play the devil's advocate. If I were to be accepted into NYU Abu Dhabi, I would be eager to share my challenging questions. I will be the student that always brings around sticky notes filled with questions from last class, critically examining any and all opinions, and asks the controversial questions that are unacknowledged or under-investigated.
On a similar note, I am very passionate about NYU's multiple campuses and numerous study centers. The 'progressive norm' in our society taught me that there is an immense difference between understanding another perspective through hands-on experience to its mere recognition due to a norm. Through the Global Education at NYUAD, I would like to widen my perspectives as I have done in my past schools. Particularly, I am interested in participating in a J-term program of 'Children and Childhood: Medical, Historical, and cultural perspectives' in Shanghai; I want to academically examine the influence of socio-economical factors on a person's development- something that I have only studied through personal experiences.
Lastly, specifically in the Abu Dhabi campus, I will immerse myself in the Middle Eastern culture, which I have had few interactions with. I want to acquire new experiences about the seven emirates and add an extra perspective to consider in the future decisions I will make as a global citizen.
The common app essay that got me into NYUAD is also in this blog!
